Alopecia Causes

Hair loss, or alopecia, is something everyone faces for some reason or the other. However, patients usually tend to seek treatment for hair loss without ascertaining its cause. It is always better to seek treatment after finding out its cause as such treatment proves to be better, and more effective. The alopecia causes are something which you should watch out for and avoid them if possible.

Some people opt for wonder cures or legitimate treatments, which may not suit them. Then there are others who also risk their health by taking self-prescribed pharmaceutical drugs. Though losing money with this treatment is not a big point, it is the point that the treatment may worsen their health, and not prove to be beneficial in curing alopecia that proves it not reasonable to take wonder cures or legitimate treatments.

Basically, shedding of hair is quite normal. There is a cycle from the growth of the hair, to its hair shaft getting detached and then the hair detaching itself to lead to hair loss. Usually, when hair falls, new hair begins to grow, thus repeating the normal cycle or hair growth. It is when other factors that interfere with hair growth process that tends to lead to hair thinning and premature baldness.

Androgenetic alopecia accounts for most types of hair loss in men and women. This is usually associated with aging and develops in different stages over time. In case of hereditary baldness, some hair follicles are genetically coded to remain for a shorter period than other follicles. For such a case of alopecia, there should first be a predisposition of hair loss occurring and a presence of male hormones. Men and women produce the male hormone testosterone and DHT with men having higher levels of androgens. This is why men generally suffer more from hair loss than women. There are high levels of 5-alpha-reductase enzyme in hair follicles and sebaceous glands.

These enzymes tend to convert testosterone to DHT which causes the miniaturizing of terminal hairs. With this, you find short, soft and fluffy vellus hair that doesn't actually cover the scalp. This phase becomes shorter wherein the hair is lost for good over a passage of time. Another type of hair loss, alopecia areata is a condition where follicles stop producing hair in patches on the head. However, this condition usually improves over time.

Another cause of hair loss is childbirth, major surgery, psychological stress and chemotherapy and is called telogen effluvium. Too much of stress tends to lead to hair loss; this is the reason relaxation sometimes proves effective in controlling hair loss. Then there is hair loss that results from constant pulling of the hair, and this is called traction alopecia. Excessive styling, exposure to chemicals, exposure to the sun, severe illnesses and nutritional deficiencies are all the other alopecia causes. Recognizing alopecia in the initial stages helps a lot too. As alopecia is difficult to treat but easy to prevent, it is always better to prevent it beforehand rather than treat it later.

Hair Straightening

The most recent and advanced method of permanent hair straightening is known as Japanese hair straightening (also known as thermal conditioning). This system was brought to the US from Japan in 1998. It is kinder to the hair than the old treatments, which used hydroxides and lye. Various supporting products and treatments have been developed since 1998, which make this the premier hair straightening practice.

How will I know if hair straightening will work for me?

Look for a hair stylist who is exclusively trained to work with hair straightening. He/She will be able to assess your hair and give you a recommendation. Not all hair types are well suited for traditional straightening, but the new Japanese hair treatment will work well on almost everybody's hair.

The first step is to do a strand check of your hair. This will determine the best strength of the relaxer, which is to be used. Your stylist will examine your hair's texture, elasticity, and porosity, and will assess any damage present.

There are basically 5 kinds of hair products used: Chemical hair relaxer formula, Neutralizer, Petroleum cream, Shampoos designed specifically for relaxers and Hair relaxing conditioners. These will be customized according to your hair's requirements.

How long does it take?

It generally takes 3 ½ to 6 hours. There are 4 main steps to this procedure:

  • To avoid any chemical burning, a protective petroleum cream can be applied to protect the scalp and also to your hair it it's been previously relaxed or damaged.
  • A chemical hair relaxer is applied to loosen, soften, and relax your natural curls. If your hair is overly spongy or slightly damaged from being previously over-processed, your stylist may use a conditioner-filler before applying the relaxer. The relaxer is left on for the right amount of time for your hair, and is thoroughly rinsed out with warm water.
  • Then a neutralizer is applied to your hair to oxidize and reinstate its pH level. This is because if the relaxer created too high a pH, your hair could swell and break.
  • Next, hair conditioner is applied. There are two types, the cream conditioners and protein or liquid conditioners. The best type will be used for your hair, to bring back some of its natural oils.

How to Braid Someone Else's Hair or the Front Section of Your Own Hair.

  • Start by applying a styling gel, mousse or pomade to clean, damp hair and blow-drying it as smooth as possible. Braiding hair that has not been washed that day and already has hair products in it also works well.
  • Divide tangle-free hair into 3 even sections. Place the left section between your left index finger and thumb, let the middle section hang free and place the right section between your right index finger and the thumb. This will start to create the hair braids.
  • Grab the middle section with your right middle finger and pull it so that it passes behind the right section. Extend your right thumb and index finger so that the portion of hair therein becomes the middle section.
  • Use the left middle finger to pull the middle section behind the left section and extend or straighten the left index finger and thumb to make the left section become the middle section. Pay attention to the smoothness and tension of your hair braid sections.
  • Shift the portion of hair hooked in the right middle finger so it is in the middle of the right index finger and thumb; repeat the process, then shift the portion of the hair hooked in the left middle finger so it sits in the middle of the left index finger and thumb.
  • Continue until you have achieved the desired length of the hair braid. Make a tighter, tighter braid by pulling the middle section into a horizontal line as you pull it to the right or left. For a loose, elongated braid, just shift the middle section to the right or left, letting it remains in a vertical line.
  • Tie off the ends of the hair braid with a rubber band.

How to Braid the Back of Your Own Hair?

  • Style the front of your hair, including wisps, bangs and tendrils, before you begin your hair braid. Divide tangle-free hair into 3 even sections.
  • Lift your left elbow to shoulder height and make a thumbs-down fist around the left portion of the hair and do the same on the right side, letting the middle portion lie against your spine.
  • Extend your left index finger and hook the right section of the hair. Pull it in front of the middle section, letting it slip totally out of the right hand. Grab the middle section of the hair with your right hand, pull it to the right side, then resume the thumbs-down fist position with both hands.
  • Extend your right index finger, hook the far left portion of the hair and let it slip totally out of the left hand. Continue this process until the braid is complete.

To braid very long hair, you may have to free a hand to pull the portions all the way through. Secure the developing braid by pressing your knuckles into it as you shift your hands for the subsequent cross.

Punk Hair Style

Nowadays, teenagers opt for punk hair styles as they are wild and outrageous with which it is possible to draw attention to you with the hair style. Usually, the diffident wild colors, funky styles and crazy cuts are its indication. However, not all such can be considered to be a punk hair style. It was started by rock groups that wanted to look unique. It is basically a hair style that is not accepted in society today with odd hair colors. However, all this can damage hair and its conditioning.

One important aspect of punk hair styles is the incorporation of unusual hair colors and color combinations. Of course, the colors that are usually used are orange, purple, blue, green and pink. Their neon shades provide a better effect. These colors can be used in different ways to create a punk hair style. They can be either applied to all the hair, or in just sections. Sometimes tips of strands, stripes and parts of hair are highlighted to create bangs or crowns. You can use your imagination in creating color combinations worthy of a punk hair style. It is always better to use colors having a high contrast like using platinum blonde tips on black hair, which look really great.

Like color, the cut has to be something that is not accepted as a normal hair style. This is made possible with stark contrasts and unusual configurations. An example is one which is long on top, only to end with a buzz cut on the lower part of the head. You could consider asymmetrical hair cuts with perhaps long hair on one side and short on the other. You could also shave words or special patterns on the back of the head.

The most common and famous punk hair style is the Mohawk style where the hair is cut vertical in a narrow band, from the center of the crown of the head to the back. An addition to this hair cut is bald or shaved sides or sides arranged with spikes. Another style is the flyaway where the hair is not styled but let loose like rock stars. Then there are weird hair styles that you can create and make unique like strange parts, loops, spikes, braids and accessories.

Punk hair styles came into being in the l980s. This was when rock bands placed more emphasis on means of making them look unique and distinctive from others. Once these rock bands sported these punk hair styles, teenagers accepted them as a means of expressing themselves and to attain some individuality amongst themselves.
